FIXE SOUTHERN HOUSE

500 W 5th St, Austin, TX 78701

Ok!  This place is slightly out of the Westlake boundaries but it is very close by!  It features awesome from scratch southern favorites!  They offer fabulous dinner options but it is hands down one of best weekend brunch places in Austin.

I had driven past this place on west 5th street a million times and honestly felt like it looked a little too starched white polo shirt for me (not that there’s anything wrong with that) but I was wrong!  As with most places in Austin the customer profile when we visited was everything from worn out blue jeans, flip flops, and favorite old ball caps, to party attire that was probably a carryover from the prior nights events, to full monty Sunday best!

While many refer to it as upscale southern food, I would tend to agree but must say it is not all that upscale. There are many lunch and brunch items for $12 or less. Dinner entrees are a bit more as they tend to start at $22 (ie Fried Chicken) and go up from there.  All in all though, based on how crazy expensive so many places have become, Fixe falls in the moderate price category in my mind. And, they also have happy hour deals!

Ok.  On to the food; before even starting on other items you must begin with the Fixe Biscuits!  OMG. The biscuits with the special butter, homemade preserves, and local organic honey are to die for!  We also had the Deviled Eggs and Smoked Trout Dip as openers. We then moved on to the Fried Chicken (excellent) and the Vegetarian which featured fresh vegetables more or less as side dishes all presented on one plate.  It was very good but this is the one dish that maybe could have been a little more composed than it was rather than the feeling of sides on a plate.

The decor is a very comfortable in blending modern chicken coop-chic with overstuffed chairs in the dining area along with an open concept kitchen which is always fun to see.  The staff was very knowledgeable of the menu, professional, and had just the right amount of attentiveness without being bothersome.

The real test of an overall dining experience is how ready you are to go back.  Our dining experience was less than 24 hours ago and yes, we are ready to go back!
